My Blog Title

“We didn’t start the Fire” is the name of my blog. Of course, this is the title of a great hit by Billy Joel about everything that happened before we were old enough to change the world. It reads like an unholy litany, naming those people and events which marked – one might say – scarred the generation now in their senior years.

We didn’t start the fire, but we are dealing with all the “stuff” of the 20th and early 21st century. It’s part of our DNA.  We didn’t decide to use the atomic bomb, but we’ve talked about it over and over, and we can’t change history, though we can speak out about what happened because weapons became weapons of mass destruction.

We experienced the death of our heroes – JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We mourn the unsung victims of violence – the children of Sandy Hook, the women in WWII camps, the internment of thousands of good people, based on their race or ethnicity.

We fought and continue to fight – with our music – Buddy Holly, heavy metal, folk songs – Joan Baez, Kingston Trio – some pierced our hearts, others gone too soon. Church – once a sanctuary – tainted with scandals, becoming emptier, people still seeking but left to find a path of their own. The Dalai Lama, the Pope, the peace-people are still working. The destroyers still wield power, and we buy their goods to save money???

Children can’t get breakfast and we buy “things” to be part of the “in-crowd.” Children can’t read, so we label them, and give them medicine, so they will be quiet, when what they really need is a playground, a couple of caring adults, a way out of bullying and poor self-image.

Old people have become a bother – and they are being marginalized even further by their kids who can’t be bothered, and programs and housing which bleed them of their savings, and demoralize them. But still, they must carry on, no matter what the pain, because it would be immoral to say farewell before the death knell?

We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No we didn’t light it
But we tried to fight it.
