Bukowski and the Creative Peak!

Comments Mary E. Latela October 20, 2015

My dear friend, @theneuroticblog posted some quotes from poet Charles Bukowski. Among them, I select the following as my favorite: “If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights with flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”

I wonder what that would be like, to be caught in the creative moment – ecstatic – a rise to “perfect laughter.” But I think that to experience that kind of fervor once in a while, I’d have to be willing to sweat and cry and feel very alone. I am willing.

The poet speaks the secret language of coming out of the void into full blossom – fire, light, new life!

On the other hand, he laments, “Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.” I know a number of people who are so buttoned up that they fear smiling too much, or laughing out loud, lest people might think they were crazy.

Notice the guy and gal walking down the boulevard, holding onto one another as if sharing one life. Are they crazy or is this the right way to love? Notice the children, who never doubt their own SELF – they figure out a way to explain the world which makes sense to them – and to us – if we pay attention.

Thanks, dear friend, for the nudge.
